A few months ago I kept getting asked the same question in different ways. Who are the European companies actually leading the AI shift? Not the ones with the best PR, not the ones that raised the biggest rounds, but the ones genuinely rebuilding how they operate and what they ship.

I didn't have a clean answer. So we built one.

Transforming Europe is a live interactive map of 150 companies we believe are leading Europe's AI platform shift. It's live now at shiftai.events/transforming-europe and it's free to explore.

The idea started with a distinction that felt important. There are two types of company doing interesting things with AI right now. Transformers are the established SaaS businesses that built real scale over the last decade and are now rewriting their playbook around AI. Builders are the AI-native companies born into it, who never had a legacy stack to unpick. We wanted to map both, score them on the same index, and show the picture together.

We ran roughly 15,000 European companies through a data agent and five models, scoring each across six dimensions: product, operations, data, engineering, organisation, and market position. From that we narrowed to 150 across 19 countries, made some editorial calls along the way, and ended up with a single ranked dataset. Lovable tops the Builders. Sidetrade leads the Transformers.

The map itself is a D3 application. On first load it types out the line "The AI platform shift is here" and then the map ignites, company by company, like a constellation coming into focus. You can drill into any country, search and filter by type, and read a live leaderboard ranked by the Shift Transformation Index. The five companies featured most prominently are Lovable, Synthesia, Miro, Spendesk, and Klarna.

On the build side, the whole thing was generated from a single data file. Every visual, the map, the launch email, the trailer, the social assets, all of it traces back to one source of truth. When a company was added or a city corrected, we regenerated the assets and the change flowed everywhere at once. That's a different way of working than most campaign production, and it was only possible because of how we've built the Shift AI content operation around AI tooling from the start.

Why it matters beyond the map itself:

Europe has a real story to tell on AI and it isn't being told clearly enough.

The narrative defaults to the US and increasingly China. But there are companies in Manchester, Munich, Stockholm, Paris, and Barcelona doing work that belongs in any serious conversation about where AI is going. The Transforming Europe map is our attempt to make that visible, and to keep making it visible as the picture changes.

It also connects directly to what we're building with Shift AI Europe in Barcelona this October. The 150 companies on the map are exactly the room we want in that building. The founders, builders, and investors shaping what European AI actually looks like in practice.

If your company should be on it, or you know one that should, get in touch.

P.S. Shift AI Europe takes place in Barcelona but our heart lies in Portugal's pastries. Our very own Patrícia is touring Europe with pastéis de nata & VIP invites for select founders. Reach out if you want her to stop by your office.
